Iheoma - Dilemma at the office

I stared hard into my wallet. My brain was refusing to comprehend what my eyes were seeing. I closed my eyes and counted to five and opened them again. This was more like my eyes were refusing to see what my brain knew they should see. Abi, what kind of nonsense dream was I dreaming this afternoon… ‘Aunty, let me come back. Let me serve customers’ said Deola the salesgirl at the office canteen as she moved away to attend to the customers who just entered. I tried to gather my thoughts as she left. Small Papa had given me N10,000 to buy needed foodstuff on my way back home from the office. I was very sure that I put the money in my wallet and even put it in a different part of the wallet from my own small change. In fact, I still saw it when I paid for my transport fare this morning. I saw it when I removed my passport photograph to submit my bank form to the HR manager. ‘What is the matter, Iheoma?’ Sharon asked. We had both come down to the canteen to eat together. She ...

Hannah's story

Hannah’s story in the bible has usually been like one of the bible story we learn as kids in Sunday School as one of the lessons of faith or as evidence of God’s ability to answer prayers. Personally, I have read it more than a couple of times, more often than not as the story of how Samuel the prophet was born way way back many centuries ago… But even though it does not span more than a couple of chapters in the bible, it is a profound story with a lot of insight that applies to modern life and living. While setting my sights on read a more ‘ mature ’ epistle written by Paul ( sometimes my reasoning confounds me sef ), I had a nudge in my spirit to read 1 Samuel. The story of the mother somehow caught my attention. I had never really considered what this woman went through or the price she paid but I found myself amazed at her sacrifice. Many would probably think it inconsequential until they put themselves in her shoes. There is no other word to call it other than sacrifice....

My brother Uche

My name is Iheoma. I am the third girl of my mother and her last born. My mother is the third wife of my father, Papa Uche. Brother Uche is the only male child in our family and my mother's first born, which was why my mother had the status of the favourite wife in the house. Altogether, my father had twelve children in the house and three wives. To be clear, we were fourteen females and two males in the house, meaning overplenty of drama every day in Ukunu! Unusual it was but my brother was not spoilt like other only sons. It seemed like God had given him a special nature that our parents could not influence, a brain like computer and a tall physique that farmwork had buffed well. If our mother favoured him with a juicy and thick piece of meat, Brother Uche would manage to cut small for me without our mother seeing him. My mother said that the day she gave birth to me, the labour pangs caught her unexpectedly while at the farm. Uche was the only one there to help her because ...

Simplicity of Me, Complexity of We

If I am granted one  sure banker  wish, it would probably be to be in heaven, free from the stress and strains of earth and all its inhabitants. The main challenge is that I would have to be dead,  un- alive, six feet under… unless rapture happened like now. That would really make things easy for me, wouldn’t it. But if rapture happens, a number of Christians would also be raptured and around in heaven.  But would they still portray their complex human nature in heaven? Would they exhibit the wide range of human emotions that makes living so chaotic? I hope not! Life has been good to me and it has also been hard. It has dealt me blows I am still reeling from but it also makes me laugh a lot. It has not been fair, it has not been kind, it has not been all beautiful, it has not always been caring. It has been refreshing as well as frustrating, annoying but downright amazing too. Life has been life, I guess, I am not sure. My experiences cannot adjudge the varie...
