King David’s Battle

Most of us know the story of David and Goliath. A number of us grew up to the story being repeated at home, in school and at Sunday school class. I think the story motivated me to stand up to a class bully in Primary 3 (rolls eyes). It is a beautiful story of how a young lad was able to bring down the enormous giant, Goliath with a stone in a sling in the name of the Lord. It is in the similitude of facing one’s fears and defeating them. But why was God able to use David to bring down Goliath? What about other mighty men of war in the army? David was busy minding his father’s sheep when he was summoned by his father. When he got there, the prophet anointed him. Strangely enough, even his father did not really reckon that David will be the one to be anointed. He thought his firstborn, strong and well built, would be God’s choice. Thank God the prophet did not anoint based on his own mind set – can’t really blame him. When he anointed Saul, he noticed his physical attributes –...

Daughter in law || Mother in law

Timi sighed deeply as he disconnected the lengthy call with his Mum. ‘Darling, Mama said she is coming over by next weekend’, he told his wife. Adana’s countenance changed automatically. ‘That is good. When exactly? And how long will she be staying?’, she quickly added when she noticed my gaze. ‘She did not really specify o; you know Mama now. By next week, we will know more details. But you know she is coming over to help with the babies’, I replied. ‘My sister is already around for that, dear. Plus you know my mother has already arranged to come over by month end. Where would they all stay?’ she replied with a scowl fast marring her features as she exited our bedroom. I just quietly decided not to press the issue but I could not help but wonder why Mama and Adana just did not get along well. They seemed to manage themselves whenever I am around but even a donkey would sense the tension in the air. Truth be told, Adana never uttered anything bad about Mama but you could easil...

Son of Timaeus: The Desperation of a Needy Man

I was about six or seven years when I desperately wanted my father to buy a VCR player. To my utmost disappointment, he refused. I  was so pained, I could have almost traded anything for one, especially since almost everyone had one in their homes. As I saw the isolation of my situation and the adamant stance of my father, I resorted to praying almost every day for God to meet my need so I could watch movies until I went off to boarding school. So many years after, I still smile when I remember how desperate I was to acquire one as though it was food. Not having one till some years later made me resort to watching NTA channel 5, channel 10 & channel 7, and reading novels. It did not have an adverse effect on me; it was not a need, it was a want. A need is a thing we have to have while a want is a thing we will like to have. A need is essential, compulsory for functional living (food, housing, clothes) while a want is something you can do without. A couple of days...
